Window Replacement in the Capital Region

Most homes in Albany, Troy and Schenectady were built before 1960, and a lot of them are still running their original wood sash or the first round of vinyl that went in during the 1980s. Those windows are not just drafty. They are the reason the room over the garage never gets warm and the reason the furnace short-cycles all February.

Quick answer

Window replacement in the Capital Region typically runs $450 to $1,400 per window installed, with most whole-house projects landing between $8,000 and $26,000. Insert replacements take one to two days. Full-frame replacements take longer because the trim and sill are rebuilt.

Sundog replaces windows two ways, and the difference matters more than any brochure will tell you. An insert replacement keeps your existing frame and slides a new unit inside it, which is faster, cheaper, and right for a frame that is still square and dry. A full-frame replacement takes the whole assembly back to the rough opening so we can see the sill, the header, and whatever water has been doing behind the trim for thirty years. On older Capital Region housing stock, full-frame is often the honest answer.

We measure every opening ourselves, we tell you which approach each window needs, and we put it in writing before anyone orders anything.

Signs your windows are past repair

  • You can feel moving air at the sash when the wind comes off the Hudson
  • Condensation or fog sits between the panes, which means the seal has failed and the gas fill is gone
  • The sash will not stay up, or it takes two hands and a shoulder to open
  • Paint is peeling on the interior trim, which usually means moisture is getting past the glass
  • Ice forms on the inside of the glass on single-digit mornings
  • Your heating bill jumped and nothing else in the house changed

What window replacement costs in the Capital Region

Price moves on three things: the frame material, the glass package, and whether the opening needs work. A standard double hung vinyl insert in a sound opening sits at the low end. A large casement or a full-frame replacement in a 1890s Troy rowhouse where the sill has to be rebuilt sits at the high end.

ProjectTypical installed rangeWhat drives it
Single double hung, insert$450 to $850Frame material and glass package
Single double hung, full frame$700 to $1,200Trim rebuild and exterior capping
Large casement or slider$800 to $1,400Size, hardware, and glass weight
Bay or bow assembly$3,000 to $7,500Structural support and roof detail
Whole house, 10 to 15 windows$8,000 to $26,000Count, sizes, and frame condition

Why glass specs matter more here than they do down south

Albany sits in the northern climate zone. That changes which glass package is correct. In a cooling-dominated climate you want a low solar heat gain coefficient to keep heat out. Here, heating dominates for roughly seven months a year, so you want a low U-factor for insulation and you can often accept a higher solar heat gain on south-facing openings to get free winter heat. Look for ENERGY STAR certification in the Northern zone rather than a generic ENERGY STAR sticker. Argon fill and a warm-edge spacer are worth the small upcharge in a climate that sees single digits most winters.

Historic districts and what you can actually install

If your home is inside the Central Troy Historic District, Albany's Center Square or Hudson Park districts, the Schenectady Stockade, or a Saratoga Springs design review area, the exterior appearance of your windows is regulated. That usually means matching the original sash configuration, keeping the same sight lines, and sometimes staying with wood or an approved wood-clad product instead of vinyl. We have worked in these districts and we will tell you up front if your plan needs review before you fall in love with a product that will not get approved.

How the project runs

  1. 1

    Free in-home measure

We measure every opening, check the sill and header for rot, and note which windows need full-frame versus insert. This takes about an hour for a typical house.

  2. 2

    Written, itemized quote

You get a line item per window with the frame type, glass package, U-factor, and labor. No bundled mystery pricing, no same-day discount pressure.

  3. 3

    Order and lead time

Custom units are built to your measurements. Lead time usually runs three to six weeks depending on the manufacturer and the season. Spring and early fall are the busiest.

  4. 4

    Installation day

We protect floors, pull the old unit, check and repair the opening, set and shim the new window, insulate the perimeter, and seal inside and out.

  5. 5

    Trim, seal and cleanup

Interior trim is reinstalled or replaced, exterior is capped in aluminum coil stock, and everything gets caulked. We haul the old windows out with us.

  6. 6

    Walkthrough

We open and close every unit with you, show you the locks and the tilt-in cleaning function, and hand over the warranty paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

How long does window replacement take?

A typical ten to fifteen window insert job runs one to two days. Full-frame replacements take longer because the trim and exterior capping are rebuilt on each opening, so plan on two to four days. We work opening by opening, so your house is never wide open.

Can you replace windows in the winter?

Yes. We replace one opening at a time and the house never sits open. Winter installs are common here and lead times are usually shorter in January and February than in May. The one limit is extreme cold combined with high wind, where caulk and foam will not cure properly, and we will reschedule those days.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in the Capital Region?

If the opening size stays the same and it is a straight replacement, most Capital Region municipalities do not require a building permit. If you are enlarging an opening, cutting a new one, or adding an egress window, you will need a permit. Homes inside a designated historic district may also need a certificate of appropriateness regardless of size. We tell you which bucket your project is in during the estimate.

What is the difference between insert and full-frame replacement?

An insert keeps your existing frame and installs a new window inside it. It is faster and less expensive but you lose a little glass area and it only works if the existing frame is sound. Full-frame removes everything back to the rough opening, which lets us inspect and repair the sill and header and gives you the full original glass area back.

Will new windows actually lower my heating bill?

They help, but be realistic about how much. Replacing single-pane or failed double-pane windows with modern low-E units typically cuts heating cost somewhere in the ten to fifteen percent range for a Capital Region home. The bigger wins are usually comfort and the end of cold drafts near seating areas. If someone promises to cut your bill in half with windows alone, be skeptical.

What happens if you find rot when you pull the old window?

We stop and show you. Minor sill rot is usually repaired the same day and included. Structural rot in the header or framing is a change order with its own written price before we proceed. We never cover rot back up and we never surprise you with it after the fact.
