Storefront Glass Repair in the Capital Region
When a storefront pane breaks, the business has two problems at once: it is not secure and it is not presentable. Both matter, and the first one matters immediately. Our priority on any storefront glass call is getting the opening closed and locked, which we handle with a board-up so you can operate and secure the building while the permanent glass is fabricated.
Storefront glass repair covers broken, cracked and fogged commercial glass in aluminum framing systems. We secure the opening first, then measure and replace. Commercial storefront panes run $400 to $1,400 depending on size and glass type.
Commercial storefront glass is different from residential in a few ways that affect the repair. It sits in an aluminum framing system with removable stops and glazing gaskets rather than being glazed into a wood sash. It is required to be tempered or laminated safety glass. And the panes are often large enough that handling and setting them takes proper equipment, not two people and good intentions.
We work on retail, restaurant, office and mixed-use storefronts across Albany, Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga counties.

Response and lead time expectations
Securing the opening and restoring the glass are two different timelines and it helps to know both up front.
| Stage | Typical timing | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Board-up and secure | Same day where possible | Opening closed, business can lock up |
| Measure and order | Within 1 to 2 business days | Exact measurement, system identified |
| Tempered glass fabrication | 1 to 2 weeks | Made to order, cannot be cut after tempering |
| Laminated glass fabrication | 2 to 3 weeks | Longer processing |
| Installation | Half day | Usually scheduled off-hours |
Laminated glass and whether it is worth the upgrade
If your storefront has been broken into more than once, laminated glass is worth considering. It is two panes bonded to a tough interlayer, the same construction as a car windshield. When it breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments in place, so the glass cracks but the opening does not open. A smash-and-grab entry that takes two seconds through tempered glass takes sustained effort through laminated, which is usually enough to end the attempt. It costs meaningfully more than tempered and it also cuts street noise noticeably, which restaurants tend to appreciate. It is not bulletproof and nobody should sell it that way, but as a deterrent against opportunistic entry it works.

How the project runs
- 1
Secure the opening
Board-up so the business can lock the building and continue operating. This is the first call and the fastest part.
- 2
Measure and identify the system
We measure the daylight opening and identify the framing system so the glass thickness and gasket type match.
- 3
Order the glass
Commercial tempered and laminated units are made to order, typically one to three weeks.
- 4
Remove damaged material and prep
Broken glass and old gaskets removed, framing checked for damage and straightened or replaced as needed.
- 5
Set the new glass
New unit set on blocks with proper edge clearance, gaskets or wet seal installed, stops reinstalled.
- 6
Clean and verify
Glass cleaned, perimeter checked for a continuous seal, and the opening documented for your insurance if needed.

Frequently asked questions
How fast can you board up a broken storefront?
We prioritize board-ups and aim for same day where the schedule allows, because an open storefront is a security and liability problem that cannot wait. The board-up lets you lock the building and keep operating while the permanent glass is fabricated.
How long does it take to get replacement storefront glass?
One to two weeks for tempered and two to three for laminated. The reason is that safety glass cannot be cut after processing, so every pane is made to the exact measured size. There is no stock inventory to pull from for commercial sizes.
How much does storefront glass replacement cost?
Typically $400 to $1,400 per pane depending on size and glass type, plus the board-up if one is needed. Laminated security glass runs higher than tempered. Large panes in a single piece cost disproportionately more because handling and setting requires equipment.
Will my insurance cover storefront glass?
Commercial property policies often cover glass, sometimes under a specific glass endorsement. We photograph the damage, provide an itemized invoice, and document the board-up separately, which is what most carriers want. Check your deductible against the repair cost before filing, since storefront glass claims are sometimes below it.
Can you replace just one pane in a large storefront?
Yes. Aluminum storefront systems are designed so individual lites can be removed and replaced by taking out the stops and gaskets. The neighboring panes and the framing stay in place. Matching the existing glass tint and coating is worth attention, since a mismatched pane in a run of storefront is very visible.
Should I upgrade to security glass after a break-in?
If it has happened more than once, seriously consider it. Laminated glass holds together when struck, which turns a two second entry into a sustained and noisy effort. It is not unbreakable and no honest installer will tell you it is, but as a deterrent against opportunistic smash-and-grab it is effective, and it reduces street noise as a bonus.
