Steel Entry Doors

Steel is the value choice in exterior doors and it is a legitimate one. A steel door with a foam core is strong, secure, and costs meaningfully less than fiberglass. For a back door, a garage service door, a rental property, or any opening where budget matters more than appearance, it is often the right call.

Quick answer

Steel entry doors cost $1,200 to $2,600 installed, the lowest of any exterior door material, and they are very strong. The two real drawbacks in our climate are permanent denting and corrosion at the bottom edge from road salt.

The two honest drawbacks both show up over time rather than on day one. Steel dents, and a dent in a steel door is permanent. A stroller, a bike handlebar, a snow shovel, a delivery cart, any of them will leave a mark you cannot remove. The second is corrosion at the bottom edge, which is a specific Capital Region problem because road salt and brine get tracked onto entry landings all winter.

Both are manageable if you know about them. Choose steel for sheltered openings and openings that do not take heavy traffic, keep the finish intact, and it will serve well for decades.

Making a steel door last in upstate New York

  • Keep the factory finish intact. Touch up any scratch or chip promptly, because bare steel corrodes fast once salt reaches it.
  • Choose a door with a composite bottom rail rather than a steel one, which removes the most vulnerable point entirely.
  • Keep the threshold adjusted so water is not sitting against the bottom edge.
  • Sweep or shovel the landing rather than letting salted snow pile against the door.
  • Rinse the bottom of the door in spring to remove accumulated salt residue.
  • On an exposed entry, add a storm door, which keeps direct weather off the steel entirely.

Security: steel versus the frame it hangs in

Steel doors are marketed on security and the slab genuinely is strong. But the slab is almost never the failure point. In a forced entry, what gives way is the jamb at the strike plate, because the standard strike is held by two short screws into a thin piece of pine. A determined kick splits the jamb and the door swings open with the lock still engaged. The fix costs almost nothing: a reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws driven through the jamb into the framing behind it. We install those as standard on every entry door regardless of material, and it does more for security than the choice between steel and fiberglass ever will.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a steel entry door cost installed?

Typically $1,200 to $2,600 in the Capital Region for a prehung unit, including removal, sill pan, insulation, trim and hardware. That is the lowest installed cost of any exterior door material, roughly a third less than comparable fiberglass.

Do steel doors rust in upstate New York?

The bottom edge can, and road salt is why. Salt and brine tracked onto an entry landing sit against the bottom of the door all winter, and once the finish is compromised, corrosion starts. Choosing a door with a composite bottom rail eliminates the most vulnerable point, and keeping the finish intact handles the rest.

Can a dent in a steel door be repaired?

Not well. Automotive-style filler and refinishing can disguise a small dent but it rarely looks right and the repair is visible in raking light. This is the main practical reason to avoid steel on a high-traffic family entry where bikes, strollers and shovels come through regularly.

Are steel doors more secure than fiberglass?

The slab is stronger, but that is rarely what fails in a forced entry. The jamb at the strike plate is the weak point in almost every residential door, regardless of material. A reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws into the framing does far more for security than the door material does.

Do steel doors insulate well?

Reasonably. A steel door with a polyurethane foam core insulates well through the middle of the slab. The edges conduct more because the steel skin wraps the perimeter, which is why a composite edge construction performs better. Fiberglass edges out steel on overall insulation value.

Is a steel door right for a garage-to-house door?

Yes, it is the standard choice. That opening requires a fire-rated assembly by code, and rated steel doors are widely available and reasonably priced. The opening is sheltered from weather and salt, which removes the main drawback of steel entirely.
