Paying for Your Window and Door Project

Phasing, rebate programs and honest advice about financing, including when not to.

Quick answer

A whole-house window project in the Capital Region typically runs $8,000 to $26,000, which is enough money to be worth planning rather than financing on impulse. Phasing across two or three years, checking manufacturer warranties on newer failed units, and looking at current NYSERDA and National Grid programs are the three things to do first.

Phasing is underrated

There is no rule that a house must have matching windows or that a project has to be done at once. Doing the worst openings now and the rest in a later year spreads the cost, and the per-window price barely changes. We quote phased work explicitly and we will tell you which openings to prioritize, which is usually the north and west elevations and anything with failed glass.

Doing everything at once saves roughly five to ten percent through a single mobilization. That is real but it is not a reason to stretch a budget.

Check the warranty before you pay

If your windows are under twenty years old and the glass has fogged, there is a genuine chance the seal is still covered. Many manufacturers warranty insulated glass seal failure for ten to twenty years and some warranties transfer to a new owner. There is usually a small label etched in a corner of the glass identifying the manufacturer and approximate date.

This comes up constantly on homes in Malta, Clifton Park, Halfmoon and Wilton, where a lot of the housing is from the 1990s and 2000s. We look for that label on newer homes as a matter of course, and we will tell you when a claim is worth filing before we quote a replacement.

Rebate and incentive programs

New York State runs residential energy programs through NYSERDA, and National Grid offers efficiency incentives for Capital Region customers. Program terms and dollar amounts change, sometimes more than once a year, so we do not promise a specific figure and you should be skeptical of any contractor who does.

What we do is provide the documentation these programs ask for: manufacturer spec sheets, NFRC ratings for each unit, and itemized invoices formatted so you are not chasing us for paperwork three months after the job. Check current offers directly with NYSERDA and National Grid before planning around a number.

If you are considering financing

  • Get the total cost in writing first. Financing decisions made from a monthly payment figure rather than a total are how people overspend.
  • Compare the financing offer against a home equity line or a credit union loan, which are frequently cheaper than contractor-arranged financing.
  • Watch for deferred interest promotions, where the full accrued interest is charged retroactively if the balance is not cleared in the promotional window.
  • Confirm whether the financing cost is embedded in the project price. Some contractors quote a higher price to cover the financing fee.
  • Ask whether the same price is available if you pay another way. If not, that difference is the real cost of the financing.
  • Never finance a project you have not had a second quote on.

Sundog quotes the project. We are not a lender and we do not mark a project up to cover a financing arrangement. If you want to compare financing options, we are happy to give you a written total you can take to a bank or credit union.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sundog offer financing?

We quote the work and we are not a lender. What we provide is a written itemized total you can take to a bank, a credit union, or a home equity line, which is frequently cheaper than contractor-arranged financing. Ask us for a written total and compare your options.

What is the cheapest way to pay for new windows?

Phasing the project across two or three years, if the timeline allows, because it avoids borrowing entirely. If you do need to borrow, a home equity line or a credit union loan is usually cheaper than promotional contractor financing, particularly deferred interest offers.

Are there rebates for energy efficient windows in New York?

NYSERDA runs residential energy programs and National Grid offers efficiency incentives, but terms change frequently so check current offers directly rather than relying on a contractor quoting a number. We supply the spec sheets, NFRC ratings and itemized invoices these programs require.

Could my fogged windows be covered under warranty?

Quite possibly if they are under twenty years old. Many manufacturers cover insulated glass seal failure for ten to twenty years and some warranties transfer to new owners. Look for a small etched label in a corner of the glass identifying the manufacturer, and we check for it as standard on newer homes.

Do you require a deposit?

Custom windows and doors are built to your measurements and cannot be resold, so a deposit covering the material order is standard practice across the trade. The amount and the schedule are stated in your written quote before you sign anything.
