A Troy Window Company That Does Repair Too
Sundog is women owned, locally run, and built on the idea that a contractor who can only sell you one thing will always recommend that thing.
Sundog Window and Door Installation is a women owned company based in Troy, New York, operating as Mastaba Homes LLC. Founded by Alicia, Sundog serves Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Saratoga counties with window and door installation, replacement, repair and glass work.
Why Sundog exists
Most window companies in this region sell replacement windows. That is their product and their business model, so when a homeowner calls with a drafty room, a sticking sash or a fogged pane, the recommendation is a house full of new windows. Sometimes that is right. Often it is not.
Alicia started Sundog to do the whole range of the work: balance and hardware repair, insulated glass unit replacement, sash kits, storm windows, restoration, and full replacement when replacement is genuinely the answer. When a company can profitably fix your window, telling you the truth about whether it needs replacing stops being a sacrifice.
What we do differently
- Written, itemized quotes with a line per opening, the frame spec, the glass spec, the U-factor and the labor. No bundled mystery pricing.
- No same-day discount pressure. Our price is our price whether you sign today or in March.
- Repair quoted alongside replacement whenever it is a close call, so you can see both numbers.
- A sloped sill pan under every unit and a correct shingle-lap flashing sequence, which is what stops a wall rotting in year five.
- We tell you when attic insulation would do more for your comfort than windows would, even though that means a smaller job for us.
- Historic district reality checks before you order, not after.
Women owned and locally run
Sundog is a women owned business, which in this trade is still uncommon enough to be worth saying. It is also genuinely local. Our office is in Troy, our work is within four counties, and the people who measure your windows are the people who install them.
That matters practically more than it sounds. It is why we know that a Central Troy Historic District application takes time and should start before you order, why an Albany rowhouse masonry opening needs a treated buck rather than a heavy bead of sealant, and why every house on a particular Clifton Park cul-de-sac fogged up within the same two years.
How we work
- Free in-home measure, roughly an hour for a typical house.
- Every opening measured individually, with the sill and header probed for rot.
- A written quote you keep, with enough detail to compare against anyone else.
- Custom units built to your measurements, typically three to six weeks.
- Installation one opening at a time, so the house is never standing open.
- Full cleanup and haul-away, and warranty registration handled for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sundog a women owned business?
Yes. Sundog Window and Door Installation is women owned and was founded by Alicia. We operate as Mastaba Homes LLC out of Troy, New York.
How long has Sundog been working in the Capital Region?
We are a newer company operating in a market our team has worked in for years. What we bring is direct knowledge of this region: the historic district processes in Albany, Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs, the masonry openings in the cities, and the specific failure patterns in the suburbs built out in the seventies and eighties.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully insured for the residential and commercial work we perform. We can provide a current certificate of insurance on request, and we would encourage you to ask that of any contractor before work begins.
Do you use subcontractors?
The people who measure your windows are the people who install them. For specialized trades that occasionally come up on a project, such as excavation on an egress window installation, we work with established local partners and they are identified in the quote.
What areas do you cover?
The four-county Capital Region core: Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Saratoga counties. Our office is in Troy, so the nearest towns get faster scheduling, and the outer edges of our range we prefer to batch with other work in that area.
Why is the company called Sundog?
A sun dog is an atmospheric effect, a bright spot of light that appears beside the sun when ice crystals in the air refract sunlight. It is a cold weather phenomenon you actually see in upstate New York, and it is about light coming through. That felt like the right name for a company that puts windows in houses.
