Entry and Front Door Installation in the Capital Region
The front door is the one part of your house that every visitor touches and every passerby judges. It is also, in most Capital Region homes, one of the largest air leaks in the building envelope, because door weatherstripping compresses thousands of times a year and eventually stops sealing.
Entry door installation in the Capital Region costs $1,200 to $4,500 for a standard prehung unit and $3,000 to $7,000 with sidelights. Fiberglass is the best all-round choice for our climate because it will not rust at the bottom from road salt and will not dent.
A good entry door replacement solves four things at once. It stops the draft across the entry floor, it improves how the front of the house reads from the street, it upgrades the security hardware, and it gets rid of the annual ritual of repainting a swollen wood door.
The choice that matters most is material, and in our climate it is not a close call. Fiberglass handles road salt, snow shovels, temperature swings and sun without rusting, denting or warping. Steel is the budget option and it works on a protected back door. Wood is beautiful, appropriate for historic homes, and needs real maintenance on an exposed elevation.
Signs your entry door needs replacing
- You can feel cold air at the floor when the door is closed and locked
- Daylight is visible at the top corner or along the latch side
- The bottom of the door or jamb is soft, swollen, or rusting through
- The door has to be pulled or lifted to latch
- The deadbolt no longer aligns with the strike without forcing it
- The finish is peeling and it is the third time you have refinished it
- The door is hollow-feeling and you want a real security upgrade
Fiberglass, steel or wood in the Capital Region
The honest comparison for a climate with road salt, sixty inches of snow, and swings from below zero to the nineties.
| Material | Installed cost | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiberglass | $1,800 to $4,500 | No rust, no dents, best insulation, wood look available | Higher upfront cost |
| Steel | $1,200 to $2,600 | Lowest cost, very strong, good security | Dents permanently, bottom edge rusts from road salt |
| Wood | $2,500 to $6,000 | Authentic for historic homes, can be refinished | Needs refinishing, swells and sticks in humid weather |
| Wood with storm door | $3,000 to $7,000 | Protects the wood, adds an air space | Two units to maintain |
Sidelights, transoms and how much glass is too much
Glass in and around an entry door transforms a dark foyer, which is why sidelights are so popular. Two practical notes for our climate. First, every square foot of glass insulates worse than the door slab, so a full-glass entry with two sidelights will be noticeably colder near the floor than a solid door. Specify insulated low-E glass and it is a non-issue. Second, code generally requires safety glazing in and adjacent to doors, which means sidelights and door glass are tempered. If you are considering a decorative leaded or beveled glass insert, confirm it is rated, because a decorative panel that is not safety glazed will not pass inspection in a new opening.
Security hardware worth paying for
The weak point in most residential entries is not the lock, it is the strike plate. A standard strike is held by two short screws into the jamb, and the jamb is usually a thin piece of pine. A determined kick splits it. A reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws driven through the jamb into the framing behind it turns a five-second entry into a serious problem, and it costs almost nothing. We install reinforced strikes on every entry door as standard. If security is a priority, a multipoint lock system, which engages the frame at three points instead of one, is the next step up and is common on fiberglass and wood doors.

How the project runs
- 1
Measure and check the opening
We measure the rough opening, check it for square and plumb, and probe the sill and framing for rot, which is common under a leaking threshold.
- 2
Configuration and style
Single, double, with sidelights, with a transom. Glass configuration, panel profile, swing direction and finish color.
- 3
Order the unit
Prehung units are built to your rough opening. Lead times run two to six weeks depending on finish and glass.
- 4
Remove and prep
Old unit and trim out, opening cleaned, rotted framing repaired, a sloped sill pan installed under the new threshold.
- 5
Set plumb and shim
Unit set, shimmed at every hinge and at the strike, checked for even reveal, then fastened through the shims into solid framing.
- 6
Insulate, trim and hardware
Perimeter foamed with low-expansion foam, interior casing and exterior trim installed, threshold adjusted, locks and deadbolt fitted and aligned.
What a Sundog entry door install includes

- Low-expansion foam around the full perimeter
- Interior casing and exterior trim
- Threshold adjusted so the sweep seals without dragging
- Deadbolt and lockset installed and aligned

Frequently asked questions
How much does a new front door cost installed?
A prehung steel entry door runs $1,200 to $2,600 installed. Fiberglass runs $1,800 to $4,500. Adding sidelights pushes the range to $3,000 to $7,000 because the opening is wider and the unit is substantially more expensive. Those figures include removal, disposal, sill pan, insulation, trim and hardware.
Is fiberglass really better than steel for an entry door?
In our climate, yes, for a door that takes weather. Steel dents permanently from anything that hits it, and the bottom edge corrodes where road salt and snowmelt collect. Fiberglass does neither, insulates better, and modern fiberglass with a wood-grain texture is genuinely hard to distinguish from wood. Steel remains a reasonable value choice for a sheltered back door.
How long does front door installation take?
One day for a standard prehung replacement. A unit with sidelights or a transom, or one where the opening needs to be widened or the framing repaired, takes one to two days. The lead time to get the door built is the longer part, typically two to six weeks.
Can I keep my existing door frame and just replace the door?
Only if the frame is square, plumb, not rotted, and the hinge positions match. In older Capital Region homes that have settled, this is uncommon, and a door hung in a racked frame will never seal properly. We check the frame before recommending it. When the frame is genuinely sound, a slab swap saves real money.
What is the right way to stop a draft under the door?
Adjust the threshold first. Most modern thresholds have screws along the top that raise and lower the sill cap, and the door sweep is supposed to lightly contact it. If the threshold is maxed out and there is still a gap, the door sweep is worn and should be replaced, which is inexpensive. If cold air is coming in at the sides or top instead, the frame was not shimmed and insulated properly and the fix is at the perimeter, not the door.
Do I need a permit for a new front door?
Not for a same-size replacement in most Capital Region towns and cities. You will need one if the opening is being widened, for instance to add sidelights, since that is a structural change. If your home is in the Central Troy Historic District, an Albany historic district, the Schenectady Stockade or a Saratoga Springs review area, a street-facing door change may require review even at the same size.
