Garage Door Panel Replacement in the Capital Region
Backing into the garage door is common enough that we treat it as a category rather than an accident. So is a basketball, a snow blower, and the wind catching a door that was left half open.
A single damaged garage door panel can be replaced for $300 to $800 rather than replacing the whole door. The constraint is availability: on doors more than about fifteen years old, the matching section is frequently discontinued.
The good news is that a sectional garage door is made of separate horizontal sections, and a single damaged one can usually be swapped without touching the rest. That turns a two thousand dollar problem into a few hundred dollar one.
The catch is availability, and it is worth knowing about before you get your hopes up. Manufacturers discontinue panel designs, embossing patterns and colours regularly, and a section that does not match is arguably worse than the dent.
When a panel swap works
- One or two sections are damaged and the rest of the door is sound
- The door is under roughly fifteen years old, so the section is likely still made
- The track, springs and rollers are all in good condition
- The damage is to the panel itself rather than to the frame or track
- You can identify the manufacturer, usually from a label on the inside of a section or on the track
- The door has not faded so much that a new panel will stand out
Panel replacement against a new door
| Damage | Panel replacement | New door | Usually |
|---|---|---|---|
| One section, door under 10 years | $300 to $800 | $1,800 to $4,200 | Replace the panel |
| One section, door over 15 years | Often unavailable | $1,800 to $4,200 | New door |
| Two sections | $600 to $1,500 | $1,800 to $4,200 | Depends on availability |
| Three or more sections | $900 to $2,400 | $1,800 to $4,200 | New door |
| Bottom section only | $350 to $900 | $1,800 to $4,200 | Replace the panel |
| Panel plus bent track | $700 to $1,800 | $1,800 to $4,200 | Get both quoted |
The bottom section is a special case
The bottom panel does more work than the others. It carries the bottom brackets that the lift cables attach to, it holds the bottom weather seal, and it takes every impact from grit, snow, salt and anything the door closes on. It is also the section most likely to rot on a wood door and most likely to rust on a steel one, because it sits in the meltwater. Two safety points follow from that. The bottom brackets are under full cable tension whenever the door is down, which is why they carry warning labels and why loosening them without releasing the spring tension first is genuinely dangerous. And a bottom section that has rusted around the bracket fixings is not a cosmetic problem, it is a structural one, because that is what the cable is pulling against.

How the project runs
- 1
Identify the door
Manufacturer, model, panel design and colour, usually from a label inside the door or on the track bracket.
- 2
Check availability honestly
We find out whether the section is still made before quoting, because on an older door it frequently is not.
- 3
Assess fade
A fifteen year old white door and a new white panel are not the same white. We will tell you if it will show.
- 4
Order the section
Typically one to three weeks. Sections ship as individual panels.
- 5
Swap the panel
Door is supported and the springs safely managed, damaged section removed, new section fitted with new hinges and rollers as needed.
- 6
Rebalance and test
Door balance checked, opener force verified, safety reverse tested.
What decides whether it is worth doing
- Whether the exact section is still manufactured, which is the main constraint
- How faded the existing door is, since colour mismatch can be obvious
- How many sections are damaged, because past two the economics shift toward replacement
- Whether the bottom section is the damaged one, since it carries the cable brackets and the seal
- Whether the track and frame were bent in the same impact
- The age of the springs, because a door apart is a good moment to do them

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace just one garage door panel?
Yes, if the matching section is still manufactured. It runs $300 to $800 installed against $1,800 to $4,200 for a new door, so it is well worth checking. The limitation is age: on doors over about fifteen years old the section is frequently discontinued.
Will a new panel match my existing door?
In design and profile, yes, if the section is still made. In colour, it depends on how much the existing door has faded. A fifteen year old white door and a new white section are not the same white in daylight, and we will tell you honestly whether it is going to show before you order.
How do I find out who made my garage door?
Look for a label on the inside face of one of the sections, usually near an edge, or on the track bracket or the spring anchor plate. It will normally give a manufacturer and often a model. Photograph it and send it to us and we can check availability from that.
Is it safe to replace a panel myself?
The bottom section specifically is not, because the bottom brackets are under full lift cable tension whenever the door is closed, and releasing them without first managing the spring tension is dangerous. Upper sections are less hazardous but the door still has to be properly supported while a section is out.
My door got hit by a car. Is a panel enough?
Sometimes, but a vehicle impact often bends the track and occasionally the frame, and a new panel running in a bent track will bind and wear. We check the track, the rollers and the opening for square before quoting a panel, and we will tell you if the impact went further than it looks.
How long does a replacement panel take to arrive?
Typically one to three weeks for a section that is still in production. Custom colours and discontinued designs take longer or are not available at all, which is the point at which the conversation turns to a new door.
