Storm Door Installation in the Capital Region

A storm door does three useful things in this climate. It creates a dead air space in front of your entry door, which measurably reduces heat loss. It protects the entry door itself from driving rain, snow and UV, which matters enormously if you have a wood door on an exposed elevation. And it lets you open the house up on the handful of perfect days upstate New York gives us.

Quick answer

Storm door installation costs $400 to $1,100 in the Capital Region. A storm door adds an insulating air space in front of your entry door, protects it from weather, and gives you a screened opening in summer. Installation takes about half a day.

The version you choose matters. A full view storm door is a single large glass panel, sometimes with an interchangeable screen. A self-storing storm door has glass and screen panels that slide within the frame so you never have to store a panel in the garage. A retractable screen door hides the screen in a cassette and disappears when you do not want it.

One caution specific to storm doors: on a south or west facing entry with a dark colored door behind it, a full-view storm can trap enough solar heat between the two doors to damage the finish on the entry door. We check exposure before recommending one.

Reasons to add or replace a storm door

  • Your entry door takes direct weather with no porch or overhang
  • You have a wood entry door you want to protect
  • You want ventilation without opening the main door
  • The existing storm door has blown open in wind and bent the closer arm
  • Glass or screen panels are cracked, missing or no longer slide
  • The frame is corroded or the hinge rail has pulled away from the jamb
  • You want a pet-resistant screen on the entry

Storm door styles compared

The main decision is what you do with the screen when you are not using it.

The solar heat trap problem

This is the one genuine downside of storm doors and it is rarely mentioned at the point of sale. A full view storm door in front of a dark colored entry door on a south or west facing elevation creates a small greenhouse. On a sunny afternoon the air between the two doors can reach temperatures high enough to blister paint, warp a wood door, or in extreme cases void the entry door manufacturer warranty. Several major entry door manufacturers explicitly limit or void warranty coverage when a full view storm door is installed over a dark door in direct sun. The fixes are straightforward: choose a ventilating storm configuration, choose a lighter entry door color, or skip the storm door on that particular elevation. We will tell you which category your entry falls into before you order.

How the project runs

  1. 1

    Measure the opening

Storm doors mount to the exterior casing, so we measure the casing opening, not the door. Out-of-square casings need attention or the door will not seal.

  2. 2

    Check the exposure

South and west facing entries with dark doors behind a full view storm can trap heat. We flag this and recommend a ventilating configuration where it applies.

  3. 3

    Select the style

Full view, self storing, mid view, or retractable screen. Hinge side and color to match trim.

  4. 4

    Mount the hinge rail

The hinge rail is fastened to the casing, plumb, with fasteners long enough to reach solid wood behind the trim.

  5. 5

    Fit and seal

Door hung, sweep adjusted to the threshold, expander at the bottom set, perimeter sealed to the casing.

  6. 6

    Closer and wind chain

Closer adjusted for speed and hold-open, and a wind chain installed so a gust cannot tear the door off its hinges.

Storm door styles

  • Full view, single large glass panel with an interchangeable screen
  • Self storing, glass and screen panels slide within the frame
  • Mid view, glass on the upper half with a solid lower panel
  • High view, more solid panel for doors that take heavy traffic
  • Retractable screen, screen hides in a cassette when not in use
  • Security storm door with a heavier frame and a keyed lock
  • Pet-resistant screen mesh
  • Colors to match trim, typically white, almond, bronze and black
  • Wind chain and heavy duty closer included as standard

Frequently asked questions

How much does a storm door cost installed?

Typically $400 to $1,100 in the Capital Region, depending on style. A basic full view or mid view door sits at the lower end, self storing in the middle, and retractable screen and security models at the top. Installation is about half a day.

Do storm doors actually save energy?

Modestly but genuinely. The dead air space between the storm and the entry door reduces conductive heat loss, and the storm door cuts wind-driven air infiltration at the entry door perimeter. The bigger practical benefit for most Capital Region homes is protecting the entry door itself from weather, which extends its life considerably.

Will a storm door damage my front door?

It can, in one specific situation. A full view storm door over a dark entry door on a sunny south or west facing wall traps solar heat and can blister the finish or warp the door. Some entry door warranties exclude this. On those elevations we recommend a ventilating storm configuration or a lighter door color.

What is a self storing storm door?

One where the glass and screen panels both live in the door frame and slide up and down, like a double hung window. You never have to carry a panel to the garage or find somewhere to store it. It is the most popular configuration here because it removes the seasonal chore entirely.

Why do storm doors blow open and break?

Because the closer alone cannot stop a gust that catches the door when it is partly open. That is what the wind chain is for. It is a short cable between the door and the frame that physically stops the door before it can swing past its hinge limit. Many storm doors are sold with one and many installers skip it. We install one on every door.

Can I get a storm door with a pet-resistant screen?

Yes. Most storm door lines offer a heavier vinyl-coated polyester mesh option, and we can also rescreen a standard storm door with pet-resistant mesh. If you have a dog that pushes at the screen, this is worth doing from the start rather than after the first repair.
